There has been in incident at the Pain Hole again. Park visitors are strongly advised to assist rangers in reporting any trespassers in the area.
Plan ahead for late summer - fall congestion! This time of the year is the park's peak season.
Please remember to NOT feed the squirrels! One broke into the ranger station last weekend and destroyed it.

Mt. Elphaven NP reopens its doors. The EVO issues that it is safe to visit again, but continues to monitor volcanic activity.
A M6.9 earthqauke from the activity has caused a slope to fail in the west side. All roads and trails nearby are CLOSED until further notice.

DANGER:

The EVO has issued an alert for volcanic unrest. While the park continues to keep its doors open, beware of periodic earthquakes and other geohazards.

PARK CLOSURE:

The Pain Hole and trailheads leading to the location remains CLOSED throughout the rest of the season.
A massive landslide due to recent earthquakes has BLOCKED the western end of the park. Visitors must use the east road.

CAUTION:

Parkwide BURN BAN in effect until further notice. Campfires are PROHIBITED.

INFORMATION:

Usage of drones in the park is PROHIBITED.
Cell service is very spotty throughout the park. Free reliable internet is offered only at the main visitor center.

About the Park

Long thought to be extinct, Mount Elphaven is an active Cascade volcano within the park's boundaries. Established in 1969, Mount Elphaven National Park was acquired through the collaborative efforts of federal organizations along with the park service to preserve its natural resources. The Elphaven Volcano Observatory was established in 2004 to monitor the volcano.

Mount Elphaven National Park is located some ways off from the town of Elphaven, Oregon. Lodging and off-site camps can be found in the town. On clear days, the volcano can be sighted in the distance.

The park is home to a highly diverse ecosystem. Unique native species not seen anywhere else in the world can be found in this park. Along the western edge of the park is the temporate rainforest while the ponderosa pine forests line along the eastern side and subalpine meadows dot the base of Mount Elphaven. Multiple visitors have reported presence of a b̴͕̩̠̎̈́̀l̷̻̟̣̈͂̎a̶̟̳̩̾̍͘n̷̛̼̚k̷̹̩̘̈́̓ē̴̫͙̟͆t̴̛̯̳̼ ̶̥̤̩̄̿b̵̼̍͜ȯ̸͕͐̽g̵̭͍̔͋ within park boundaries, but were unable to rediscover its location - all bog-related alerts are to be taken with a grain of salt. Rangers are aware of these reports and are working on resolving this phenonemon.

While beautiful during the day, Mount Elphaven has proven to be dangerous at night. Unknown sightings have been reported within park boundaries. Please hike the trails with caution once the sun sets and prepare accordingly.

Ranger Stations and Visitor Centers

Mt. Elphaven Main Ranger Station - Located at the main entrance to the north of the park. Rangers are present to distrubute maps and collect donations. Permits can be purchased here. This entrance stays open year-round.
Elphaven Visitor Center - Located near the northern main entrance. Park information desk, gift shop, and exhibits. There is free reliable internet for the public at this center. Bathrooms with running water are open 24/7.
Elphaven Volcano Observatory - Located on the western base of Mt. Elphaven. The observatory's lower level includes a gift shop and special exhibits displaying the park's geology. Upper levels are restricted to park personnel ONLY. However, there are certain days of the year the EVO offers tours of their building.
The Crack Shack - A smaller visitor's center on the western portion of the park. Most notable of this center is its exhibition of s̵͉̯͙̀͗͠t̶̢̪͕̖̘̿͠r̸͇̟͛̏̍̇à̷͈͎̝͗͆̽͜n̷̡̗̲̾̆͜ǧ̵̮̭̦ę̵͕̱̌̍́̉ ̴̟͔͎̬̰͋c̵̠̦̪̕͜u̸̳͔̼̝̿̏͐̏r̶͓̲̲͗̈́̍̄͛ĭ̴̳̭̟̱̃̈o̵̙̦̯͒̉s̵̱̰̈́ĭ̷̌͘͜t̷̥̙̀ì̴̢͙̙̻̖̏͗̍͠è̷̢̜̯̈́̏̚s̵̢̫̺̻͐̅͐.̵̅͘͠ͅ. Lodging

Mt. Elphaven Historical Lodge - The oldest lodge in the park. The lodge was built when Mt. Elphaven was a ski resort before being acquired by the national park service and has been burned down and rebuilt multiple times. There are reports that this lodge may be h̶͔͒̽a̵̰̺͇͕͂́̏͐͝u̶̞̪̜͒ǹ̸̢t̵̖̤̥̐̀̉̕e̴̜̞̼̓d̴̼̱͆͜.

Trails

Summit Trail - Rating: DIFFICULT. This is a treacherous trail involving steep, rugged terrain and icy paths. The hike is worth it however, as the entire park's boundaries can be viewed at the volcano's summit.

Attractions

Mount Elphaven Peak - The Summit Trail leads to the peak of the main vent.
Lake [NAME] - A large glacial lake formed in the lowlands of the park. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, and paddling is permitted. Boating requires a license.
[NAME] Falls - One of the many waterfalls that dot the region.
Unicorn Shrine - It is unknown as to who built this shrine or what exact purposes it serves.

Geology and History of Mt. Elphaven

At first glance, Mt. Elphaven might resemble volcano with a collapsed peak. However upon further inspection, the volcano actually divides off into two vents, hence the two peaks. Interestingly enough, the two volcanoes have recently been discovered to be different in composition, one being andesitic and the other being dacitic, which suggests they have completely different magma chambers despite their extreme proximities to one another.

Fumarolic activity is detected through steam vents on the peaks, as so are occassional earthquake swarms in the region, indicating possible magma movement. It is currently unknown when the last eruption occurred.

The existence of Mt. Elphaven has always been shrouded in mystery due to the seemingly perpetual fog covering the mountain. It was only discovered recently in the 20th century when explorers noticed an addiitonal peak of Cascade volcanoes on an unusally clear day. Despite its recent discovery, there is evidence of settlements near and around the mountain dating as far back as the pre-historic era.

The truth about Mt. Elphaven:
The mountain is a cleverly disguised remnant of a monsterous yet dying creature - one that mimics the nature of volcanos. No one is sure how it came here, but the Dragonfly Palace Geological Survey (DPGS) has confirmed of its existence and that it may have been here for at least a few million years, forming the root of the volcano. The creature is reported to be at the end of its lifecycle as volcanic activity has slowed over the years - no historic eruption was recorded in human history - yet there is evidence in ash deposits and lava flows that there were long periods of violent activity in the past thousand years. Similar to a dying volcano's magma chamber, the creature is slowly crystalizing to stone, slowing down its movement.

It is unknown what will happen to the area once it full crystallizes. Is the park magical due to its presence? Or was it lured in millenia ago due to the area itself being a hotspot for supernatural occurances? Only time will tell.

Aside from the slumbering volcanic beast, the park is home to many supernatural creatures as well as where portals leading to the feywild can be found at random intervals. Yes there is a moving bog in the park. Yes it changes location every day.
